Just like people, horses often grow up with “holes” in their training and education. And again, just like people, they sometimes acquire undesirable habits as they mature.

Unfortunately, both issues are usually due to parallel holes and habits in the individuals who handle and ride them: inexperience, ignorance, or both can, over time, fracture a horse’s confidence, leading to problems in the relationships he attempts to form with a human partner. When this kind of breakdown occurs, the horse may need to be “restarted”—that is, given a second chance to begin anew. In order to do this successfully, his trainer needs to know how to retrace the steps the horse’s education has taken, ready to find the path missed the first time around.

Internationally renowned horseman Mark Rashid has made it is his life’s work to pinpoint the causes of equine distress that perhaps make a horse’s life in the company of humans difficult. In this book, the first of the expansive library of books penned by Rashid to include dozens of full-color photographs, readers are guided through practical steps for restarting horses, using Rashid’s simple, quiet techniques derived from years of study of martial arts.

And, in true Rashid storytelling style, dozens of anecdotes entertain while gently revealing important lessons integral to every horseperson’s journey.

  • Aimed specifically for those restarting a horse whose first training experience was either harmful or lacking
  • A how to guide on gaining a horse's trust and confidence
  • Includes step by step, how to colour photographs
  • Dozens of anecdotes entertain while revealing important lessons
  • Written by Mark Rashid, whose first novel, Out of the Wild has just been released as a feature film

THE AUTHOR

Mark Rashid is an internationally acclaimed horse trainer known for his ability to understand the horse’s point of view and solve difficult problems with communication rather than force. He has ranched for many years gathering herds, managing stocks and training horses whilst his clinics centre on one-on-one work with horse and rider and are immensely popular worldwide. He is the author of 9 books including Horses Never Lie and Nature in Horsemanship.

"Rather than being a ‘how-to’ guide to working with damaged horses this is a unique book filled with anecdotes of horses Rashid has worked with and helped, one that the astute horseman can delve into over and over again and learn so much about horses and how to improve our relationship with them. This book should be compulsory reading for anyone who works with, or rides horses." - Jacqui Broderick, Horse and Pony Ireland (you can read the full review here) "Not all of us have the experience to start our own horses, though, and often inherit other people’s problems. I have great respect for Mark Rashid as a trainer, and this book makes an interested read for any horse owner. It’s a series case studies, which covers common training problems such as refusal to be caught, and covers psychology as well as training methods.” - Gemma Alstein, Horse and Countryside (you can read the full review here) '...one of the first books I've seen specifically for anyone restarting a horse which has previously been started - but not so well.' - Wendy Parsons, The Essex Rider
